The legend of Sant Jordi:

The tradition of Sant Jordi in Barcelona, celebrated every year on April 23rd, is a unique fusion of legend, love, and literature. But what is Sant Jordi Day, and why is Sant Jordi celebrated? The story goes back to medieval times: who is Sant Jordi? He was a brave knight who saved a princess from a dragon, and from the dragon’s blood, a rose bush bloomed. 

That’s why roses Sant Jordi Barcelona are a beloved symbol of this day. Later, books were added to the tradition to honor the deaths of Shakespeare and Cervantes, turning it into a cultural celebration. 

Where is Sant Jordi celebrated? All over Catalonia, but especially in Barcelona. Later, the tradition of giving books was added to celebrate the deaths of literary giants Shakespeare and Cervantes on the same date. April 23rd is not only Sant Jordi’s Day but also World Book Day.
